Requirements

If you are planning to enrol in a higher education programme in Serbia, understanding the academic requirements is an essential step. Entry requirements vary depending on the academic level—bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral studies—and the specific programme.

General entry requirements

Bachelor Programmes

To enrol in a bachelor’s or integrated study programme, candidates must meet the following general requirements:

  • Completion of a four-year secondary education programme
  • Successful completion of an entrance exam

The entrance exam usually assesses a candidate’s knowledge in specific disciplines relevant to the chosen programme. The exams are usually held in two rounds:

  • First Round: Early July
  • Second Round: Early September (only if places are available)

Admission rankings are based on the candidate’s entrance exam results and their academic performance at the secondary school level. For some programmes, additional prerequisites, such as specific subject knowledge, may apply. It is important to review the admission criteria for each programme of interest.

Master’s Programmes

Master’s programmes in Serbia are divided into two types based on their duration:

  1. One-Year Programmes (60 ECTS): Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with at least 240 ECTS credits.
  2. Two-Year Programmes (120 ECTS): Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with at least 180 ECTS credits.

Specific admission requirements vary from one programme to another,  and usually relate to the candidate’s field of previous education. It is recommended to review the details on the programme’s webpage or contact the institution directly for clarification.

Doctoral Studies

Doctoral programmes (PhD) require candidates to have:

  • A master’s degree
  • A minimum of 300 ECTS credits accumulated through previous studies

In addition to these general requirements, institutions may set specific criteria such as:

  • A minimum grade point average
  • Evidence of research experience, such as published papers in scientific journals

These requirements are programme-specific, so it is essential to consult the relevant institution’s website for details.

Language Requirements

The primary language of instruction in Serbia is Serbian. However, many programmes, particularly at the graduate and postgraduate levels, are also available in English.

  • Studying in English: Over 180 English-taught programmes are offered across all academic levels, and can be found on the Study in Serbia catalogue and website. Some programmes provide additional support for international students, such as consultations with professors in English. These programmes are particularly suitable for students participating in shorter mobility schemes like Erasmus+.
  • Studying in Serbian: Foreign students who wish to enrol in Serbian-taught programmes must demonstrate proficiency in the language. This opens up access to a broader range of study fields and programmes. Students can prepare by enrolling in intensive Serbian language courses, which are available online or in Serbia. The year-long or semester-long preparatory programme for Serbian as a foreign language is especially helpful for those planning to take entrance exams in Serbian.
