Medical care

Foreign nationals visiting or residing in Serbia are entitled to urgent medical assistance. However, the type of medical care available depends on the specific agreement between Serbia and the individual’s home country regarding healthcare provisions. These agreements determine the extent of healthcare services accessible to foreign nationals during their stay.

Serbia offers both public and private healthcare institutions. Public healthcare is generally provided through state-run hospitals and clinics, which offer medical services according to the terms of international agreements. In some cases, foreign nationals may be entitled to treatment at no additional cost, based on the agreements between Serbia and their home countries. However, these agreements vary, and some foreign nationals may need to pay for services depending on the conditions outlined in their home country’s agreement with Serbia.

Private healthcare providers in Serbia charge for all services, and their fees are usually higher than those of public institutions. However, private hospitals and clinics may offer better services in some cases, such as shorter waiting times or specialised treatments.

Emergency

The Emergency Ambulance Service can be reached by calling 194 and it is available 24 hours a day. In larger cities there are also health institutions for all kinds of urgent conditions or injuries which are open 24 hours as well as selected pharmacies. However, please have in mind that not all medicines can be bought in pharmacies, since some of them require a doctor’s prescription.
