CEEPUS exchanges for Central and Eastern Europe
The Central European Exchange Programme for University Studies (CEEPUS) is an academic exchange programme connecting 15 countries in Central Europe: Albania, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Designed to promote regional collaboration in higher education, CEEPUS enables students and academic staff to participate in mobility programmes that enhance their learning, teaching, and research experiences.
What Does CEEPUS Offer?
The programme offers short-term and long-term mobility opportunities to students and allows them to spend a study period abroad (long-term mobility) or conduct research for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation at another partner higher education institution (short-term mobility). CEEPUS is based on university networks comprising at least three higher education institutions (or their faculties and departments) from the CEEPUS countries.
There are two types of mobility: mobility inside CEEPUS networks (network mobility) and mobility outside CEEPUS networks (free movers).

The programme includes several benefits:
- Waived tuition fees at the host institution.
- Monthly grants to cover living expenses.
- Depending on the host country, additional benefits such as free accommodation or subsidised meals.
Types of CEEPUS Mobility
- Short-Term Student Mobility: Lasting up to three months, this is ideal for students conducting research for a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.
- Long-Term Student Mobility: Ranging from three months to two academic semesters, this enables students to complete part of their studies at a partner institution.
- Short-Term Excursions: For participants of short group mobility activities, such as summer schools, lasting up to six days.
Eligibility Criteria
To participate in CEEPUS, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a student enrolled at a higher education institution in a CEEPUS member country and have completed at least two semesters of studies.
- Hold citizenship of a CEEPUS member state. Foreign students without citizenship in a member state may also apply but must provide an “equal status document,” such as a residence card or visa.
