Serbian Universities Recognised in the CWUR Global 2000 Ranking 2026

While rankings should never be the only factor in selecting a university, they provide valuable insight into how institutions perform on an international level. The latest Global 2000 List 2026 published by the Center for World University Rankings once again recognises the strength of Serbian higher education, with four Serbian universities earning places among the world’s top institutions.

The 2026 edition of the ranking evaluated 21,291 universities worldwide, with only the top 2,000 institutions earning a place on the Global 2000 list.

What Is the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR)?

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) is an international organisation that provides policy advice, strategic insights, and consulting services to governments and universities with the aim of improving higher education and research performance.

Since 2012, CWUR has published one of the world’s most comprehensive global university rankings. Unlike many other international rankings, the CWUR methodology does not rely on reputation surveys or data submitted directly by universities. Instead, it uses objective indicators to evaluate institutional performance, making it one of the few rankings based entirely on independently collected data.

Initially launched as a ranking of the world’s top 100 universities, the project expanded rapidly due to international interest. In 2014, it grew to include the top 1,000 universities, and since 2019, the ranking has listed the top 2,000 universities worldwide, making it one of the largest global university rankings currently available.

The CWUR ranking measures universities across several key indicators that reflect both academic quality and research excellence. These include:

  • Quality of education, based on graduates’ academic achievements.
  • Employability, measuring the professional success of alumni.
  • Quality of faculty, recognising prestigious academic awards and distinctions.
  • Research performance, including research output, high-quality publications, influence, and citations.

Because the ranking is based on objective performance indicators rather than institutional surveys, it provides an independent perspective on how universities compare internationally.
