Universities are independent higher education institutions that may offer all types and levels of study courses. Universities consist of individual faculties, and in order to obtain accreditation universities have to offer all levels of study courses at least in three areas of studies.

Serbia currently has 17 accredited universities - 8 state universities, and 9 private universities. In total, there are around 216,647 students at universities* (out of which 181,688 study at public and 34,959 at private universities).
